It was strange to see him with dark brown hair, but his eyes were the same, and his smile when he squeezed her hand was no different than before. Kat returned his smile, then pulled away to tuck her curls more securely under the baseball cap she wore. She looked like any young woman out that day, wearing running sneakers and jeans, and she slipped her hand back into his and gave a tug."Want a cookie?"
Mode gave an exaggerated sigh. "I knew you saw the bakery." She gave him an even bigger smile. "Of course I did!" He sighed again, but allowed her to lead him across the busy street to the little shop on the corner. His grip on her hand tightened when they stepped inside the shop, and Kat glanced up at him. This was only the second time they'd been out alone, and it made him nervous to be around so many strangers. She'd had enough practice with Wick that it didn't bother her anymore, but they still had to be careful, and she leaned over to kiss him lightly on the shoulder.
"It's okay," she told him quietly, and then pointed to the display case. "Chocolate chip or oatmeal raisin?"
