After receiving the news that Helen wasn't going to be available to test the fighter he'd built for her, Cas was unhappy. After learning that the replacement pilot was going to be three hours late due to mechanical difficulties with the military transport she was on, Cas was irritated. When he discovered the reason he'd been having trouble opening the hood of the Tayce was the small latch he'd added three weeks ago to keep the untrained from trying to open it, he moved right over the edge into angry. This isn't fair, he repeated in his head for the hundredth time as he scanned the engine compartment of the Tayce prototype he'd had moved to the launch bay the previous evening. Everything was still where he'd left it, just as it had been ten minutes ago, and fifteen minutes before that. It's Helen's fighter. They knew I was going to have it finished. Once he'd learned that Helen had been assigned to patrol duty for six months, he'd made a request to have the demonstration postponed, but his superiors had denied it out of hand. They saw no reason to delay when there were plenty of qualified pilots that could use the equipment, and Cas couldn't come up with any good reasons either. Not fair. He slammed the hood shut and thumbed the latch into place and went to check the cockpit. |

last updated at Aug 12, 2002 04:34 p.m. (1 times) At the very least, the corridor should have echoed her footsteps, Vex thought as she strode towards the launch bay. A prototype fighter should have had more fanfare for its maiden flight. Maybe a few trumpets, a drumroll at least... A saucy grin slowly curved Vex's lips as she marched down to her own drumbeat.Stepping into the launch bay, Vex cringed as she heard something slam. Her stride didn't waver, however, and she approached the prototype with admiration. Through the transparent dome of the craft, she saw young man peering into the cockpit. She could only hope he was the engineer. By the way he moved protectively over it, he must be. Though he must have been expecting her, three minutes late as she was, he looked up, surprised, as she saluted. No harm in being polite, after all. "Lieutenant Essen reporting!" The grin was still on her face and didn't waver as she recieved a scowl from the engineer. She dropped her salute. |

"Lieutenant Essen reporting!" Cas looked up with a grimace and looked the woman over in irritation. It didn't matter that she was qualified; it wouldn't have mattered if they'd sent him some overdeveloped specialist who could fly a teacup through a hurricane. It wasn't Helen. "Hello," he said shortly. "If you'll step this way I'll explain the basic instruction. It's a modification on the old VF-32 model fighter, and most of the navigation is still pretty close to the original. There are four forward lasers, two aft and eight missile slots that can be fitted for anything between the Spitfire and Northstar classes. The control panel has..." he went on, explaining the stats on the Tayce, re-explaining when she looked like she didn't understand. Given his current mood, that was probably more often than necessary, but Cas wasn't going to give her any excuses to crash his ship. She was attentive enough, and when he finished, he studied her more directly, trying to gauge how much she'd retained. "Any questions?" |

She must have had a glazed look in her eyes as she mentally recalled the specs while the engineer explained them, because he had an unfortunate tendency to reiterate. Her smile was still on her face, more because it tended to unnerve people than because she was happy. He finished with a brusque "Any questions?", and she forced back a laugh. "No sir." she said blandly. No wonder they'd had to call her in. This poor young man would have already brought out the arrogance of most of her peers. Pilots are a touchy lot, my lad. You could learn to appreciate us a little better. She climbed into the cockpit, immediately aware of the design changes. The armament bank was larger, obviously, and the nav system had been shifted over to allow room for a larger control panel. The Tayce would be enough of a challenge to be fun. Vex's hands caressed the controls. She looked up as she felt the engineer's eyes on her. |

He watched her as she examined the cockpit with interest, getting used to the controls. At the very least, she seemed to appreciate the design, and Cas began to feel some self-reproach. It wasn't her fault Helen wasn't there to give the Tayce her maiden flight, and she seemed capable enough. Maybe he'd been a little too brusque in his recital. She looked up, and he shifted his weight uncomfortably from one foot to the other. "Do you like it?" he asked, suddenly hesitant. |

last updated at Sep 18, 2002 02:35 p.m. (2 times) Her frown of concentration was released as Vex answered his question. "Do I like it? It's amazing!" she grinned. Poor kid, maybe it was just performance anxiety. "I'll just take her out and see what she can do, shall I?"The nav computer was already displaying the course she would run. Though she had practiced the sims of this run while she was on the transport, this.. this would be the real thing. She slid into the form-fitting seat and buckled the harness around her. As the canopy slid closed, she gave Cas a grin and a thumbs-up. |

The fighter's controls came on at her touch, and she watched Cas ascend to the small control room above the bay. The launch doors opened and she could feel the vacuum around the little craft. Through the glass, she looked out at the run, lit by tiny red beacons against the pale stars. Vex eased the craft away from the station, using the slightest pressure to adjust her heading. It responded beautifully. "If you took a normal fighter and took out all the extraneous crap, this is what you'd have." she murmured before remembering that her comments would be recorded. She began reciting the run to the recorder as she accelerated past the first set of beacons and looped around the second. The rest of the run was a full twenty minutes of the most extreme maneuvers the tactical guys could come up with. By the end, Vex could feel the tension across her shoulderblades. As she slid the Tayce into its slot, she relaxed against the padded seat. She felt rather than saw the launch doors close, and released the latch to allow the canopy to receed. |

Helen or no Helen, Essen did appear to know how to put a fighter through its paces, and after the first few minutes of watching he actually began to enjoy himself. The Tayce performed precisely to specifications in every category, outperforming the latest IF designs by seventeen percent at the least. The maneuverability was really its best feature, an showed improvement over the Talons by forty-three percent. With the footage Essen provided he would certainly be granted a competitive test to prove it, and by then, maybe Helen would be more accessible. If she wasn't, though, Essen might be a good back up. She executed the more complicated maneuvers as easily as she did the standard ones. She wouldn't have Helen's battle sense, perhaps, but she certainly knew how to fly. The demonstration completed and the Tayce settled back into the docking bay, the anchors clicking into place as it locked into its slot. Cas grinned and went to meet her as she climbed out, his previous attitude completely forgotten in the face of engineering achievement. "Hey, that was pretty good! I'm sorry there wasn't room for you to try the turbos out, but we'll get that in the competitive trial. I think I might need to adjust a few things. It looked like it was pulling to the left the smallest bit. Was there anything else you noticed?" |

Vex chuckled at the change in Cas's attitude. "A slight tug to the left, yes, but nothing too bad. And the landing was a bit rough; I don't know if you noticed.. It felt like one of the hydraulic pumps wasn't at full capacity." She could feel the rush of the flight slowly draining away. "Why don't we finish talking about this over some food? I'm famished." Vex turned toward the door and gave Cas an inquisitive grin. |

Cas was already halfway into the hydraulic pump system when she mentioned food. He started to wave her away automatically; an engineer did not eat until he was done with what he was doing. But nerves had kept him from eating breakfast this morning, and after such a successful trial run the relief uncovered an extremely healthy appetite. He thought it over a few more moments and then reluctantly set down his drill. "I guess some food wouldn't be a bad idea," he admitted. "I have to turn in my report, but I can do that on the way." He grabbed the little hardcopy disc and his desk and walked with her out into the hallway. |

Vex's hazel eyes sparkled with repressed laughter as Cas reluctantly extracted himself from the innards of the Tayce. He seemed so dedicated, so innocent. Cute and harmless; rarely find that in fleet... As Cas led their way through the identical-looking corridors, Vex studied the engineer. He was polite and formal, friendly in a distant way. She wondered how he managed to get through command school unscathed. Or if he had simply avoided confrontation, as she had. Casting about for something to break her introspective silence, Vex settled on the inane. "How are you liking your assignment to Central Command?" |
