last updated at Mar 25, 2001 10:10 p.m. (1 times) Still withdrawn into herself, Dante stalked into her quad barracks almost absentmindedly, only partially aware of her surroundings. Her icy demeanor had melted just slightly at the unwanted feelings that had arisen after seeing Nathan again. But he wasn't hers anymore, she wasn't his, and Dante's long-practiced coldness reminded her that was a good thing. Nathan, that betraying, avenging Angel had all but broken her heart and her body. He didn't deserve whatever warmth she might have left to give.Entering her room, she managed a half-hearted smile at her quadmate Nicolai. He was lounging lazily in his bunk, and his gaze turned worried as he noticed the break in her composure. Hopping to his feet, he walked over and planted a kiss on her cheek, his cocky air always making her grin, even if it was just a temporary happiness. "Thanks, Nic." Dante whispered, sliding into her bunk and watching him with tired eyes. "What have you been up to today?" "Not much, sweetheart... managed to find myself a new girlfriend, but I think she doesn't appreciate my talents yet." He winked, then his grin faded. "You sure you're alright? If it was that test for your tactics class, that's one tough exam, my buddy Marko, remember him? He failed it last term, but still managed to pull a good grade in that class... I'm sure you did fine, you always worry and things turn out just perfect." He continued to ramble on as Dante shook her head and flopped back onto her pillow with a groan. "T'wasn't that, Nico... just nevermind. Just let me sleep now, okay?" Dante closed her eyes and settled in, ignoring Nicolai. He shrugged nonchalantly and retrieved his desk from his bunk, running a hand through his hair as he looked down at her. "You're such a bitch, Jélice, but that's why I'm madly in love with you." "Fuck off, Nic. Now shut up, don't make me beat you later at the sim." He laughed, and she smiled unwillingly, but Nic leaned over to pat her on the leg. "I'm going to the library to do some work. Try not to pine away for me while I'm gone." Dante snickered, then rolled over and started to drift off as Nic strolled quietly from the barracks. |

Nic sauntered into his room, tossing his desk gently onto his bunk and moving to sit at the foot of Dante's bed. She was still asleep, her tumult of fiery curls obscuring her face as she lay buried in her pillow, and he smirked as he squeezed her knee. Dante gasped and kicked out, knocking him from the bed, and she huffed with irritation as he sat on the floor and laughed. "Oooh, sorry to disturb you, Your Highness. But we don't want you lazin' your day away, now do we?" Nic climbed back into his own bed, leaning against the wall and watching her with a lazy gaze. Dante rolled over in bed and gave him a severe frown, but a smile flickered across her lips before she could stop it, and with a groan she flopped onto her back. "Whaddya want, Nico? I thought I told you to fuck off and leave me alone?" Her tone was taunting, joking, and Nic only sighed melodramatically and shook his head. "Yes, but I couldn't stand another moment away from you, oh darling Anjélice of mine. And besides, my other girlfriend left me. She's a tough one, I have my work cut out for me." Dante grinned. "Oh, poor Casanova, your chica didn't stay. Who is this lovely maiden whom you desire anyway? And don't you dare tell me you're after Rox again, after we both refused your chivalrous offers, you've been such a bastard." He huffed in mock hurt as Dante sat up in bed, sitting on the edge of her bunk and swinging her feet as she watched him. "Actually, it is not Rox, and it isn't you either, so rest easy, sweetheart. I don't know her real name, not yet, but everyone calls her Wick..." Nic paused in his soliloquy as Dante hissed, and he frowned a little. "What? You know her?" "Course I know her, she was in my army back at Battle School. Remember when I got in that fight? I didn't know you really then, but everyone heard the rumors. She was there, little merdana." Extremely annoyed, Dante pushed herself up from the bunk and brushed the curls from her face, rubbing the back of her neck as she walked over and palmed the door open. "Her real name is Moira Callenstrom. Go for it, Nico, but you have your work cut out for you..." Dante winked and stalked out, calling over her shoulder. "I'm off to the observatory if you need me." With a grin Nic settled back into his bunk and relogged onto his desk, beginning to pull up search engines and surf through the school records. Moira Callenstrom... Moira Callenstrom... his fingers tapped impatiently at his display as files began to appear, and with a self-satisfied smirk, Nic began to sort through his findings. |

Distracted from his work, Nicolai glanced up at the sound of a timid knock and a nervous voice. Wait. He could have sworn he'd heard that same tone before... it was vaguely familiar. Shrugging, he looked back down at his desk and continued his work, raising his voice only enough so that whoever stood on the opposite side of his door could hear. "Stop knocking and just come in!" |

Surprised, Nicolai could only stare for a moment as his younger brother walked in. And then the thought flashed: How the hell did Sergei get here?! Shaking his head, Nic tossed his desk aside and stood, sizing up the sibling he hadn't seen in years. Still the same awkward manner, the same timidly friendly demeanor. Some things never changed. Punching Sergei lightly on the shoulder, Nicolai grinned, a wide smile at finally being able to see his own brother again. "Sergei, little bro, how the hell did you get here? Shit boy, I haven't see you forever!" " |

Sergei grinned his usual goofy grin, but didn't bother to hide it from his brother. He was just glad to see him again. Nicolai didn't look so different from the last time Sergei had seen him, almost three years before, back before Nicolai had graduated from Battle School. He was taller, of course. And his features had strengthened a bit, making him look a bit more like a man and less like a boy. But he was still Nicolai. "I'm as surprised as anybody," he said, still grinning stupidly. "I thought I'd have iced by now for sure." |

Refraining from agreeing with Sergei's statement, Nicolai just smiled and then threw himself onto his bunk, motioning for his brother to do the same. Leaning back against the wall, he nodded his head at the Hydra symbol on Sergei's sleeve. "So, in Hydra, eh? We beat their asses at the sim... although I'm sure that Rabin says your quad is still in contention." Nic winked cockily at Sergei, smirking. "Who's in your cell, bro? Anyone I know besides Rabies there?" |

If Nic hadn't already been seated, he probably would have fallen over at the unexpected information Sergei had just supplied him with. Barely refraining from gawking openly at his younger brother, he managed to shrug nonchalantly and keep his eyes trained on his desk display. "Wick, huh? Which army at Battle School was that, bro? We've got the old Fox commander in here, Dante... I wouldn't be surprised if she strolled in soon. Have a seat, Sergei, eh? We can catch up on old news." |

Sergei seated himself, just a little uncomfortably. There was something that had changed in his brother's demeanor just now. He didn't know exactly what it was. But he was sure there was something. And now he learned that Dante was bunking her. His former commander. He wasn't looking forward to seeing her. She was one of the best commanders he'd ever had, possibly the best. And how would she remember him? As the kid that had been completely incompetant in every area that mattered. There had been launchies in that army that had been better than he was. If she remembered him -- and Sergei knew that it was too much to hope for that she wouldn't -- it would surely not be with fondness. "Um, I was in Fox," he said. "Wick was in my toon." |

Nic digested this bit of information quietly. "In your toon, eh? Interesting. And you had Dante... c'mon Sergei, wanna go see her again? I'm sure it'd be a surprise for her to see one of her old soldiers. C'mon, let's go." He pushed his desk away and stood, motioning toward the door as he watched his brother. So Wick had been in Dante's army... that explained a lot more about her reaction earlier. But it also meant she had information, valuable facts he could use to get to Wick. Like always, everything falls into place just perfectly... |

Sergei didn't want to go. He wanted to just sit and catch up with his brother. Except, he also didn't want to explain to Nicolai why he wasn't in any hurry to see Dante again. Nicolai had never seen Sergei in the battleroom. He didn't know how bad Sergei was at it. He had to have some idea, surely -- soldier standings weren't something that could be hidden, and Nicolai must have at least once looked for where his little brother stood. But standings were nothing compared to actually seeing Sergei in action. And Sergei didn't want his brother to know. He didn't want Nicolai to look at him the way the others looked at him. And they all did. Even in Fox, where just about everybody had been so nice. Even the ones that were especially nice to him, like Fargo, had started to get that look in their eyes after a while. It was pity, mostly. Pity because they knew it wasn't his fault, that he tried his best and still failed time after time after excruciating time. But there was also some resentment. Fox was a good army. And maybe it could have been a great army. But one weak link was all it took. Not that Sergei alone kept the army from success -- he wasn't so great a failure that he lost any battles for Fox. But he was the only one there that didn't deserve to be there. The others were all good soldiers. Some of them were even great. And there was Sergei, right in the middle, like the grown-ups' way of saying, "Don't get too cocky." But what could he say? No, Nic, I don't want to see my former commander, I'm an embarrassment. He had to go. Maybe there was the chance Dante might not mention it to Nicolai. He got up and followed his brother out of the room. |

Knocking softly on the door, Rox waited until Nicolai peeked out, his hair in a sleepy tousled halo, his eyes squinty. She giggled and gave him a quick kiss on the cheek, winking as she laid a hand on the doorjamb and tried to glance inside. "Hey Nico, is Dante here? We were gonna walk to classes, I'm supposed to meet her here." Nicolai nodded, rubbing his eyes tiredly as he retreated into the room, returning to his bunk and finishing dressing. Rox snuck in quietly, grinning as Dante sat up in bed and pulled on her own uniform. "Little lazy this mornin,' aren't we, you two?" Nico just grunted in reply, but Dante yawned and shook her head. "Nico here wouldn't let me sleep last night, kept tryin' to chat... but I finally got him to shut the fuck up." "Inconsiderate bastard." Rox palmed the door open as Dante stood and followed. "Hurry up, flashboy, you don't wanna be late for your little sim game this morning against Helen... I had her in my army, remember? I hope she blows you outta space." "Bite me, Jélize. You too, Rox. Have I ever lost? Yeah, now who's laughin' it up?" The trio laughed and left the barracks. |

The barracks was silent as Dante palmed open the door to her cell, stepped inside and paused as the door slid shut behind her. Solitude... so quiet, not a sound. Alone. And incredibly empty. Just like herself. But she tightened her jaw against the thought and moved toward her bunk, pulling her uniform over her head with a rough yank, then straightened her undershirt. Her long fiery curls were tousled, but she only flicked a few wayward locks from her eyes before climbing into her bunk. The soft mattress sank under her weight, and nestling her head into her pillow, hair fanned beneath her, Dante closed her eyes and folded her hands over her stomach, feeling as if she were floating in loneliness. And by the time the knock sounded on her door, she was asleep. |

last updated at Apr 02, 2001 01:04 p.m. (1 times) Mode paused, and then knocked again, a little more loudly. No response. She wasn't there. He could just leave the amulet in her Cell and it would be done. He palmed the door open and stepped inside. It took him a moment to begin to breathe again. Dante was here after all, asleep. Her red curls covered her pillow, and she seemed fragile beyone belief with her bare arms, clad only in the undershirt. She looked no different than she had years ago, when he'd fallen asleep in her room by accident and then opened his eyes to look at her before Pallas had discovered them. Well, not much different. Her body was adult now. She was more slender, more delicate than Kat. His mind threw up an unwelcome image of Kat's wide-eyed half-mad look as he tore her shirt, and he shoved it away. He could never treat Dante like that, never, no matter what had happened. Dante wasn't like Kat. Kat deserved it. Burying his guilt, he approached her and knelt. For a moment it seemed ridiculously familiar, kneeling next to her bedside as he had so long ago. No battle braid to unfasten for her anymore. He wouldn't give that kind of surrender to anyone ever again. He suddenly wanted this over with, wanted to leave and go back to Kat. He took the amulet and let it slowly puddle in her lax palm. And then her violet eyes opened. |

Nathan kneeling at her bedside was the last thing Dante expected to see as she opened her eyes. A moment passed as she looked at him quietly, silently, still reclined as she lifting her palm to see what he had given her. The golden chain tangled in her fingers, little amulet swaying gently, almost hypnotic as she stared at it. Her charm, her protection; no longer for her, a gift for the Angel she once knew, years ago. And here he was, returning it again. There was nothing left for her. She closed her eyes again and shivered, jaw tensing as she suddenly threw the amulet across the room and sat up in bed, now wide quicksilver eyes focused sharply on Nathan's face. She was disheveled, angry, full of the betrayal she knew that she had given him. Guilt fueled her rage, and twisting, she planted a foot firmly against his chest and shoved him away with all the strength she possessed. |

He was almost surprised, but not quite. He sidestepped her foot and yanked, his hands on her knee and then her bare shoulders. He could have restrained her any number of ways. Why he chose to force her to her knees facing away from him with her hands behind her back only some small dark part of him he didn't want to understand knew. "Not this time, Anjelice," he said quietly, with a hint of sadness. "Not ever again." |

It was like living her worst nightmare all over again, as Nathan pulled her from her bunk and forced her kneeling, her hands trapped behind her back. Only this time, Dante didn't bother to struggle, didn't fight or make any indication of her fear. With a resigned sigh, she merely leaned her head back to rest against his shoulder, and a few bitter tears leaked from closed lids. She felt incredibly weak and helpless again, crying as he held her, something she had sworn she'd never feel again. Her ice was melting, heart unfreezing, and all her carefully constructed barriers slowly fell to the floor as she dropped her head in resignment. "Just leave me, Nathan." |

No, no, no. She wasn't supposed to give up. She was supposed to fight, like Kat, so he could shove her away and leave. She wasn't supposed to cry. Mode felt a hot tear land on his neck as it fell from her cheek and winced. "No," he said quietly, and leaned down to press his lips to her throat as delicately as if she were made of rice paper, sliding the fingertips of his free hand over the smooth skin of her exposed neck and then up to her chin, tilting her face towards him. Her eyes were closed when he finally kissed her tenderly. And gradually, his eyes closed too, his hand falling away from her arm. |

last updated at Apr 02, 2001 01:28 p.m. (1 times) Just like he'd surrendered himself to her that day, Dante felt her defeat overwhelm her, and she surrendered with bitter regret.Even so, she didn't expect his kiss. This was the Nathan she loved before, the gentle Angel who had wiped away her tears when she was beaten, who stood before her and fought her enemies away like the knight she thought she needed. The startling shift in him frightened her, but she didn't dare to pull away as his lips touched hers. He released her arm, but she reached up a hand to run her fingers along his jaw as she kissed him back. Realization didn't strike her until she tasted blood from the corner of his mouth. Her eyes opened suddenly again, and she pulled away just slightly, gaze running over his face as the violet slowly froze to mercury. Part of her fought to get free, to kiss him again and cry for all the nights she'd spent alone dreaming of him. It tried to reason away reality and relinquish her control back to the way things used to be. Dante didn't say a word as she wiped a smear of blood from Nathan's face and held up her fingertips for him to see. |

He froze as he looked at her fingertips, saw the blood there. He could taste it now, too. How perfect. Kat had managed to intrude without even coming along. He ran his tongue under his bottom lip, expressionless, until the last of it was gone. She was still here, still next to him, but the look in her eyes was clear. She was gone too. He struggled with himself. He should leave now. He should get up and go and never return. He remained where he was, staring into those quicksilver eyes, suddenly so similar to his own. Slate swirled into smoke, and he kissed her forehead instead of her lips. He forgave her for being too pure for him. She could shove him away now, and he could leave, and it would be like they'd never known each other at all. |

When Nathan stayed kneeling beside her, instead of pushing her aside like she had steeled herself to expect, her eyes softened back to violet and she wrapped her arms around his chest, his lips still pressed to her forehead. "Je vous pardonne, mon ange, pour ce que vous ... mais s'il vous plaît, svp me pardonne pour toute la douleur que je vous ai causé dans le retour..." her voice murmured on as she closed her eyes and felt his heart beating against her. He could never be hers again; whatever had happened to him over the past two years had hardened him, made him as cold as ice; as cold as her. She kept trying to tell herself that, kept trying to push him away and demand that he leave, tried to fight down all the memories his presence brought back to her. But it was no use, and Dante cried again for her loss. |

last updated at Apr 02, 2001 06:05 p.m. (1 times) Nathan embraced her slowly, almost reluctantly. He felt helpless as she cried on him. He felt like he was cracking. Holding her close to him, he let her cry. He tilted her face up to his gently, kissed her...Maybe things could be like they'd been before. Maybe - "This one's a little young. Do you really think this is necessary? The agent only works half the time, even in adults. The director would never approve this." "We haven't tested anyone in this age group yet. It may not be totally useless. Think of the possibilities, a serum that could render a soldier medically unconscious, but awake and aware. Think of all the information they could gather...especially young ones like these." "Very well. Proceed. But just the one, you understand?" "Of course." Angel pulled a little harder at the nylette straps that bound him to the steel table and was rewarded with a shock of pain from the twitcher. "Easy now," the handler's voice said with a chuckle someplace near his head. He felt the IV, and then they poured ice into his veins. He shivered, kept shivering even when he couldn't feel himself shivering anymore. And then he knew pain. Every nerve ending screamed with it, but he couldn't move himself at all, couldn't speak. He could hear the doctors, the nurses, every sound magnified to unbearable decibles. When true unconsciousness finally claimed him hours later, he'd had dreams full of blood, Wick's, Jor's...and Dante's. HOW COULD YOU?! his mind raged, over and over again. Asmodeus... His arms around her tightened slightly as his eyes opened, hardened to slate once again. Never, he thought viciously, never again. The kiss changed, altered, as he became more aggressive, pressing his lips to hers hard as his hands passed over her torso. |

Her tears froze on her cheeks as Nathan's arms tightened around her, and he kissed her hard, running his hands over her torso. His aggressiveness shocked her into lethargy for a moment, and she paled, an odd flush lighting her skin from beneath. Dante's eyes melted to a strange, muddled sort of violet-silver, and with a gasp, she placed her hands against his chest and shoved him away. Breathing quickly, suddenly aware of her state of dishevelment and undress, she blushed furiously and turned her head away, half-hiding between her cascade of curls. It took her even longer to slow her heart as she trembled slightly, uncertain of what was happening or why Nathan had his cold slate eyes so intensely focused. She could feel him watching her, and turning to face him began to back away, still half-sprawled on the floor but pulling herself apart from him as she awkwardly tried to crawl. |

He latched on to her arm and pulled her back, but slowly. He wanted her confused, wanted her to believe this had been her idea, not his, and when he pulled her back to face him his kiss was soft, his embrace enveloping her as he slid his hands under the edge of her shirt to caress her lower back. He wanted something from her, something in payment for the pain she'd caused him, and he wanted it of her own free will. |

Confused and incredibly flustered, Dante submitted meekly to his kiss, but his hands on the bare skin of her back caused her to shiver in his arms. She was still flushed, uncertain as they kissed, and even as she wanted desperately to believe that Nathan still loved her, still wanted to be with her as much as she hated to admit that she yearned to be with him, the cold little voice inside her spoke a very different truth. He's just using you, Anjélice... nothing is forgiven, nothing can be the same again... But she shoved that frightening thought away and rested her hands tentatively against his chest, fingers curling slightly as she felt the muscles he'd grown, how strong her once-love had become. Burying her fear, she leaned closer and moved her lips against his, whispering softly as they kissed. "Mon ange..." |

"Mon ange..." Inside, Mode smirked. He brought his hands away from her back, cupped her face, brushing the hair away from her eyes before raining small kisses on her eyelids, her cheeks, and finally her lips as he silently and fluidly divested himself of his uniform jacket. Her hands shrank away from him when she touched his bare skin, but he caught one and put it on his chest, over his heart, as he leaned down to kiss at her slender throat. One hand wrapped around her waist as the other left her hand on his chest, fingers tracing up her arm, just touching the edge of her shirt at the shoulder. |

Her ice was melting, and Dante couldn't care less. When she felt her fingers touch his bare chest, she tried to pull away, but he caught her wrist and pressed her hand above his heart. She could feel his heartbeat, oddly slowly, and felt apprehensive as her own pounded wildly in her ears. She was beginning to feel overwhelmed when he wrapped an arm around her waist, ran his hand up her arms, and with a little smile of her own, Dante moved into his lap and kissed him harder. |

She kissed him hard enough to surprise him out of his smug state, and a small noise escaped him, his breath whispering past her lips and into her mouth as he held her tighter to him. His hands stilled for a moment, and then he placed one gently on her outer thigh, not moving or gripping, just resting, and returned her kiss. |

She grinned against his lips again and pressed herself closer, feeling his pulse move quicker as she wrapped her arms around his neck. A little breathless, Dante pulled back to run her gaze over him, the corners of her eyes crinkling as she smiled shyly and leaned forward to kiss his throat. This wasn't quite what she'd expected... Her memories of Nathan had kept her both warm and cold at night, his gentle kisses, their stolen time alone. He'd always smiled when they kissed, his eyes smokey and so deep she'd always wanted to lose herself in him. This newer, harder Nathan had seemed so much colder at first, so dangerous and alone that Dante had found herself watching everyone carefully throughout the school, wary and afraid. The sudden change excited and frightened her, and she didn't want to admit that perhaps this wasn't quite what it seemed. No. She wouldn't admit it. Because if it wasn't, she found herself not wanting to know. With a soft sigh, she ran her fingers through the now blonde-white spikes he wore, and kissed him gently. |

When she smiled against his lips, he returned it, but for an entirely different reason. She lifted her arms, tangled her hands in his hair and kissed him again, and he pressed her back gently to the floor before scooping her up and laying her on her bunk tenderly. A little voice in his head was giggling approval when he laid his head on her chest, just holding her for a moment as he had with Kat. Her heartbeat was wild, and as he slowly turned his cheek to nuzzle her, it became more erratic. He found her hand, held it to his cheek as he brushed his lips over her through the fabric. |

Dante didn't quite know what was happening as she was layed smoothly onto her bunk, and Nathan held her hand to his cheek as he began to run his lips over her through the thin shield of her undershirt. Blushing furiously, she tried to twist away, but found herself pinned by his weight as he rested above her. Pushing his head away with her palm, she managed to sit up on her elbows, eyes widening as her pupils dilated wildly, and whispered. "Nathan, what are you doing...?" |

He let her push him away, but not very far. Hurt he hadn't known he was capable of manufacturing flooded into his slate eyes, and he looked away for a moment before laying down beside her and gathering her into his arms, his front against her back. "Anjel..." he whispered quietly, almost brokenly, "please don't be afraid of me...." He slid deft fingers under her shirt to rest a still hand on her stomach, letting her get used to his touch, and brushed the hair away from her neck to drop kisses there. |

Please don't be afraid of me... Dante caught her breath in her throat as he placed his hand onto her stomach, wrapping an arm around her and kissing her gently on the neck. She'd seen the hurt flash into his eyes, but it only partly allayed her own wariness and fear; even his almost broken whisper made her close her eyes tightly and wish with all her might that Nathan had never stepped back into her life. Her voice was calm when she finally spoke, but the bitter choke that ended her words was unmistakeable. "Why shouldn't I be afraid?" |

Mode hissed in a breath and pulled his hands from her, his eyes flickering dangerously as he leaned in until his own face was inches from hers, his body above her. How dare she be afraid of him, after all that he'd gone through to put her at ease? She should have learned to appreciate his effort instead of throwing it in his face. His lids half-lowered, and he tilted his head slightly to the side. He could feel her breath on his face, coming more quickly as her eyes began to widen in fear. "Because I love you," he said silkily - and smirked. His hands came up more quickly than hers, and he efficiently caught them, holding her wrists captive with one hand as he dragged her undershirt up her body to tie them together and to the frame of the bunk. Anyone who survived the Institute was an expert at tying (and untying) knots, and he was better than most. He finished and sat back to survey his work. She was pale, not as pale as Wick, but nothing like Kat. She was weak, too. She lacked Kat's muscular training and coordination as well, but there was a certain delicacy that drew him despite himself as he met her gaze once again. |

Dante's worst fears became real as Nathan swiftly overpowered her and tied her helpless to the bunk. Her wrists were caught above her head, knotted to the frame with her own shirt. The cold air over her bare skin, combined with the sudden shock of his attack, made her gasp angrily and begin to struggle. She twisted, still pinned underneath him, pulling as hard as she could with her arms, trying desperately to escape. Fiery curls slipped into her eyes as they flashed quicksilver, her surge of rage escaping as a helplessly frightened whine torn from her throat. Still fighting madly against something she knew she couldn't possibly win, Dante found herself hissing all the angry words she'd held back, had buried within herself; everything and anything that had changed her from innocence to ice. "You... you talk about betrayal... about how you thought every night about how much I hurt you... you think I had it any easier? Do you think I can sleep at night? They used to drug me every week because I wouldn't sleep, I didn't dare because all I could think of was you, what I'd done, what you'd done... You wouldn't do it then, you won't kill me now... Nathan, too fucking cowardly to do anything but hold me helpless when you know I can't escape... Bien, baisez-vous! Fils d'une chienne, vous bâtard, juste me détruisez!" |

He watched her impassively as she spouted filth at him, waited until she stopped to take a breath and kissed her deeply. She tried to bite him, but he just pulled away, kissing her chest, licking at her skin with slow, deliberate motions, listening to her shocked and angry gasps and whimpers. When he pulled his head away she was trembling, flushed and glaring at him, and he smiled back at her. "Anjel...you should relax. I hear it makes it easier." He slipped fingers under her waistband and tugged gently. |

Still struggling madly, Dante froze at his words, eyes widening as he began to slip his fingers into the waistband of her last article of clothing. Beginning to tremble uncontrollably, she gasped, and began to fight, arching as he held her hips pinned beneath him, her hands turning blue from the lack of circulation as she tugged desperately at her bonds. "You wouldn't, Nathan, please... please..." she began to beg, ragingly angry at herself for the pleading tone to her own voice, even as she continued, choking brokenly. "Don't, Nathan, I beg you please..." The hard glint in his steel eyes made her own flash silver with anger and fright, and not able to bear looking at him anymore, Dante shut her eyes tightly and fought with all the strength she could muster. |

"Don't, Nathan, I beg you please..." Her words froze him to the core, and with a sudden sick backlash he was back in her commander's quarters in Fox, holding her as she brokenly begged him to kill her. Kill her, his precious Anjel. His mind had revolted then, and it revolted now. He felt weak and horrified and a little frightened as he pulled his hands back, reaching quickly to cover her with her blanket before moving up to her hands. She was pulling on them with enough desperation that she might hurt herself. "Shh, Anjel, don't, please don't do that," he whispered, trembling as he untied her hands, chafing them gently to relieve the soreness. "Please, please don't cry, I'm sorry..." He began to retreat, moving away from her and almost stumbling off the edge of the bunk in extremely uncharacteristic clumsiness. |

If his assault had surprised her before, his retreat more than overwhelmed her now. She couldn't move as he sat back, pulling her blanket over her bare torso before untying her hands. They were painfully swollen, and she gasped as he rubbed them to return blood to her fingers... but she yanked them from his grasp, suddenly angry and strong and as twistedly raging as he had just been. How dare he touch her, how dare he play with her like that?! Nathan was on the very edge of the bunk, and with a snarl, Dante launched herself at him, knocking him to the ground. The blanket slid from her, but it went unnoticed as she wrapped her painful hands around his throat, knees on either side of his waist as she leaned down to hiss at him, her face inches from his. Her eyes were mercurial silver again, long fiery locks falling to envelop them both in a tangled veil, and without once tightening her fingers she cried bitterly and just shook, still holding his throat with trembling hands. The only sound or words she was capable of was mumbled French, so broken she couldn't understand even herself, and with a final gasp she dropped her hold on him and stood, retreating to the safety of her bunk and crawling under the covers, burying her face into the pillow. |

It took all his reserve not to strike her reflexively as she pinned him with her fingers on his throat, but he wouldn't have hit her for the world. He could hear her crying into her pillow, and crept to her bedside, pressing his head against the side of the mattress, not trying to touch her at all. "Anjel...please...I don't know what's wrong with me..." he whispered hoarsely. "I...I don't understand any of this. Please, Anjel...help me..." |

But she spoke, voice husky and calm, even as her heart broke again for what she desperately wished was the last time."I will always love you, Angel, but nothing I can say will ever change what... what happened. Take my amulet..." Dante managed a nod toward the corner of the room, where the little gold trinket lay sparkling. "If it can't protect me from you, I have no use for it... but maybe... maybe it can protect you from yourself. Go. Leave me for the last time, please, and just go." She rolled onto her back then, in the same deathly pose he'd awoken her in, and clenching her eyes shut against his face, Dante swore to herself that she'd never speak the name Angel again. |

Angel rose from his place on the floor, looking down at Dante with remorse. He couldn't refuse her. Inside, something was screaming at him to take her, hit her, make her hurt like he did, but he contained it, crossing the room to gather the amulet into his hand. The darkness was coming back, and he shook his head, trying to clear it. It only slowed its encroachment, and he looked back at Dante once still laying in her bunk. "I love you," he said, almost silently, before he swept up his uniform top and keyed the door to autolock behind him. Asmodeus stepped out into the Phoenix Quad corridor. |

Nicolai arrived at his barracks to the find the door to his cell locked. He tried palming it open again, but the little red light above the pad blinked. A third time, and it stayed on, a solid unwavering spot of crimson. Odd. Very odd. He knew that Bali and Fin were in class; he'd just seen them in the mess hall, cheerfully throwing fries at anyone who dared to pass in their direction. Which meant that there could be only one person inside... Dante. Nicolai suddenly had a very bad feeling about this. "Dante!" He knocked loudly on the door, yelling louder when he heard rustling inside. "C'mon, Jélize, it's just me, Nico. I needta get inside, is everything okay? I thought that..." his voice trailed off in surprise as she unlocked the door and it slid open, her figure framed in the doorway. Nicolai caught his breath as he looked over her, taken aback by her appearance. Disheveled, fiery curls tangled about her face, jaw set resolutely as she straightened, half-dressed in her underclothes and her arms and wrists bruised. But it was her eyes that made him take a step backward; cold and burning with mercurial fire, quicksilver and hard as she watched him passively. He didn't know what to say, dropped his eyes toward the floor and mumbled an apology for disturbing her. "Uh, sorry Jélize, I, uh, didn't mean to disturb you." His normally suave demeanor was broken as he glanced back up at her again, then looked away, unable to hold her frightening glacier gaze. "Is... is everything alright?" Dante didn't answer, merely turned around and strode silently into the room, and with some apprehension he followed her inside. She began to dress herself slowly, deliberately, and he waited with awkward uncertainty near the doorway. When she was finished, he stepped aside so she could leave, but was surprised as she walked straight up to him and buried her face into his neck. Dante's shoulders shook as he wrapped his arms around her tentatively, and he could feel her trying to catch her breath, sobbing without tears against him. Holding her tighter, Nicolai rested his chin on top of her crown, sighing and remaining still until she finally calmed herself and pulled away, staring at him again with unnerving icyness. Regaining at least some coherency, he tried to smile at her and failed, instead took one of her bruised and swollen hands in his and whispered. "Want to go to the observatory? Watch the stars and sit with me?" Taking her silence as approval, Nicolai led a silent Dante from the barracks, all the while wondering just what had happened to turn her into this frozen stranger again. He had a pretty good idea. Nathan. |

Ten minutes later found Dante seated silently on her bunk as the others gathered anxiously around her. Rox moved to sit beside her, but she ignored her friend and clenched her jaw, setting her face resolutely. "I'm tired. It's lights-out. You all go to bed, and I'll see you at classes in the morning. Now let me sleep." Swede shrugged and brushed the spikes from her eyes, pulling Rox with her before the girl could protest. Nicolai sighed and watched them leave before climbing into Dante's bunk. "Anjélice, I want to know what happened. I haven't seen you like this since..." he trailed off, blushing in anger at himself. Not since he'd first met her after Nathan's attack. She hadn't been like this for all the months at command school, except for a few short relapses where she'd retreat into silence and avoid everyone for days. "Please tell me." "It's none of your business, Nicolai." She turned away from him, curling up onto her side and burying her face into her pillow. Nicolai sighed again and stretched out alongside her on his back, folding his hands behind his head as he stared up at the dark ceiling. Dante frowned to herself and huffed, voice muffled. "What do you think you're doing? Go away." "No. I'm staying here. Go to sleep, but I'm not moving." He kicked off his boots as he spoke, pushing her over lightly to share the pillow. She stiffened and then huffed again in irritated acceptance, her back against his stomach as he rested his arm around her waist gently. "I'm gonna stay here... sleep..." Dante shifted and settled into Nicolai, and with a tiny smile he closed his eyes and fell asleep with her. |

last updated at Apr 11, 2001 07:46 p.m. (1 times) She awoke a good fifteen minute before the lights came on, eyes still closed in the darkness as she felt the warmth of Nicolai's presence beside her. Surprisingly, she'd slept soundly, without the normal nightmares that haunted her, and for a brief moment she wondered if that had anything to do with Nico being near her. Who cares? You don't need anyone...Without waking him, Dante carefully lifted his arm from where lay it across her stomach, silently slid from the bunk to stand above him, watching him still asleep as he mumbled and buried his face into his pillow. A tiny grin made the corners of her lips twitch upward, and after leaning over to kiss him lightly on the temple, she stepped into her boots barefooted and grabbed a fresh uniform from her drawer. A shower. She needed some time to think, to wash away Nathan's tears and sweat from her skin, to stand in solitude and try to make sense. She wanted to be alone. With a final glance at Nicolai's sleeping form, Dante slipped from the barracks. |

When the lights finally flickered on, Nicolai woke to find emptiness, the bed beside him only faintly warm from Dante's presence. She must have just left... is she angry? I couldn't just leave her... I have to find her... or will that just make her more angry? Nicolai just didn't know. He remembered their brief acquaintance while at BattleSchool. He'd known of her before she became commander, as everyone did after the fight in Panther between her and Jorry. That was one problem, and advantage, of such close quarters; everyone knew everything about everyone else. The rumor mill had spread quickly after that altercation... as it did when she was made commander, and the confrontations between her and Jorry, her and Wick, and finally.... Nathan. He remembered really truly meeting her for the first time, a few weeks after she'd been released from the infirmary for her injuries. She was easily the coldest, most withdrawn person he'd met, and he'd hated her until he realized just what that icy shield was protecting. And now, that barrier was back up. What was he to do? Rolling from the bunk, he stretched, his spine cracking uncomfortably. Pulling on his boots, he laced them quickly before standing and straightening his rumpled uniform. Their two cellmates were still fast asleep, the green snoring lightly, and with a shake of his head Nicolai snuck quietly from the barracks. |

Nicolai had barely enough time for a startled gasp as Rox bounded into his room, jumping onto his bunk to throw herself across his legs. His sharp intake of breath made her giggle, and she placed her hand against her forehead, rolling her eyes back as she went limp. "Save me, oh handsome Nicolai, my knight in shining armor, my savior of..." He shoved her playfully, smiling as she smirked before fluttering her eyelashes at him coyly. "Save you from what, Roxy?" "Complete and utter boredom. I don't have anyone to play with. C'mon Nico. Play with me please?" Her tone was sardonically pleading, and she sat up to curl in his lap, tilting her head with those lilting chocolate eyes wide. He shook her head, and she frowned with mock hurt, features become downcast as she whimpered. "Pleeeeeeeeease?" She giggled even as she begged, and he crossed his arms over his chest, managing a severe disapproving glare. "Why? Your twins leave you all alone, little geisha? We haven't played in months. The sudden change surprises me." Even his voice was slightly twinged with truth, although he knew their separation was mostly his fault. Since Dante had arrived, he'd put Rox aside to chase the other girl, leaving his once partner-in-crime to find her own playmates. But she had the twins, and if that kept them away from Dante, he would be satisfied. "Yeah, they're after your girlfriend now." Rox snickered at the surprised expression that flashed across his face at her words. "What?!" He shifted, pushing her off of him to retreat a little, arms still crossed, but no trace of humor on his features now. She pouted, pushing her lower lip out as she poked him in the side. "Oh, don't act so hurt, Nico. It's not like you got anywhere with her. She'll be all cold and bitchy, and then you all can complain about how she's no fun, and then play with me again!" His seriousness did nothing to deter her from her bubbling sarcasm, and Nicolai felt a hint of anger. Dominic and Donovan. They played the game, just like he did, but they should know better than to intrude. He didn't really want Dante anymore, not for that; it was her warmth underneath that ice he wanted. The twins would target her for one thing, and one thing only, and he couldn't imagine the outcome. Dante didn't seem like the type to... but the men were good, adept at their game, and Nicolai feared the worse. Damnit. "Shut up, Rox. Just because you take them on doesn't mean... shit. You knew about this and didn't tell her? You know what they do!" Rox's eyes narrowed, and she huffed angrily. "What are you trying to say about me, Nicolai? You hakujin bakatare, kusotare desu ne! She can handle it herself, I'm not a babysitter for every little girl they go after. If you're so concerned they'll take what you want, go tell her yourself." She shoved her hands against his chest, hard, knocking him off-balance as he fell onto his back. Her anger was anything but fake as she kicked him in the shin and stalked toward the doorway. "Too bad, Nico, you just lost two." He watched silently as she left, rubbing his face tiredly as he sighed. Having Rox angry at him was never a good thing, and all the unwelcome thoughts of what she would do as revenge gnawed at him. Last time he'd pissed her off, and she'd gotten him ten demerit points by playing him against Bianca. Now she was really ticked off, and he regretted his rashness. Goddamnit, he cursed himself. Stupid dumbshit is right. Go find Dante. Maybe you can salvage at least her. With that final thought and another sigh, Nicolai straightened his uniform and crawled from his bunk, heading toward the corridors as the door slid shut behind him. |

last updated at Apr 23, 2001 10:33 a.m. (1 times) It had been a silent walk back to her barracks, but a content silence, as if they had nothing to say that neither didn't already know or understand. Both absorbed in their own thoughts, absorbed in eachother, and Dante smiled shyly as they finally reached her quad, Donovan leading her into the common room, still holding her hand. She squeezed his fingers, leaning up on her toes to give him a kiss goodnight......when the door to her cell slid open, and Nicolai cleared his throat. She turned to face him, unconsciously leaning against Donovan as he frowned, arms crossed over his chest as he watched the other man with hard blue eyes. Her own eyes narrowed, violet to quicksilver, and she straightened as she gave him a once over and frowned right back. "Excuse us, Nicolai." He didn't move, just continued to stare at Donovan, eyeing him with an expression she didn't quite understand. She glanced up at Donovan then, confused and irritated at being disrupted, then back to Nicolai as he finally spoke, tone cold. "Well, Donovan. What a surprise to see you." |
